This is a first edition of Sterling Hayden's The Wanderer, including a moving letter from Hayden to the former owner.  Sterling Hayden was a larger than life American individualist.  For most of his career as a leading man, he specialized in westerns and film noir, such as Johnny Guitar , the Asphalt Jungle and The Killing.  Later he was a noted character actor for such roles as Generl Hack D. Ripper in Dr. Strangelove or the Irish policeman in The Godfather.  At 6 feet 5iniches, he towered over most other actors.

As OSS agent John Hamilton, his World War II service included sailing with supplies for Italy to Yugoslav partisans and parachuting into fascist Croatia.  Hayden also participated in the Naples-Foggia campaign and established air crew rescue teams in enemy-occupied territory. He received the Silver Star (for gallantry in action in the Balkans and Mediterranean: "Hamilton displayed great courage in making hazardous sea voyages in enemy-infested waters and reconnaissance through enemy-held areas."

In 1958 Hayden was awarded custody of his four children.  He defied a court order and sailed with them to Tahiti on his boat, The Wanderer.  It was said of him "Hayden's wild.  He's kind of nuts- but you've got to hand it to him.  He doesn't give a damn about the loot or the stardom or things like that - something to do with his sea faring- or maybe what he went through in the war..."
